Luka Doncic Explains His Emotional Reaction to the Mavericks Tribute Video

Before he walked the court against his old team in Dallas on Wednesday night, Luka Doncic was overcome with emotion as the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Mavericks 112-97. Only months after the five-time All-Star was surprisingly traded to the Lakers after spending the first seven seasons of his career in Dallas, Doncic watched with tears in his eyes as the Mavericks played a tribute video.

Doncic then went on to lead the Lakers to victory with a game-high 45 points. After viewing the heartfelt tribute, he acknowledged to ESPN’s Lisa Salters on the court that it was hard to get into a playing mindset.

Luka Doncic explains what made him so emotional

After addressing the media from the podium, Doncic paused for a while to think. Which scene in the video moved him the most?
Doncic stated: “I mean, all of it for sure, but I’ll probably say the shot in the [Western] conference finals,”

“We were always the underdog in every series so the way we played together and came together—it was just another level. And everybody was locked in.”

“And I would say that was the moment. When I remembered last year.”

Game 2 of the Mavs’ five-game victory against the Minnesota Timberwolves in the conference finals last year featured the jumper Doncic is referring to. For Doncic and the Mavs, who made it to the NBA Finals before losing to the Boston Celtics, it was an exciting moment in a year full of them. Beyond the team’s accomplishments, however, Doncic created enduring bonds with the Mavericks players. Doncic stated:

“Yeah, those are my brothers,”. “I know we’re not on the same team now but I’ll always have contact with them. We went to wars together and it was nice to see everybody.”
