In the first round of the College Football Playoffs, Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith believed he had an easy victory over Tennessee defensive back Jermod McCoy.

Smith collected 103 yards and two scores on six throws as the Buckeyes dominated the Volunteers 42–17. Following the game, he ridiculed a Pro Football Focus piece on social media that implied he might be busy with McCoy:

All season long, college football fans have been in awe of Smith. In 2024, 247Sports’ composite rankings ranked him as the top player overall, and he has performed much better than expected.

Can Jeremiah Smith break into the NFL soon?

Right now, the true freshman appears capable of competing in the NFL. Tennessee just didn’t have a response for Smith on Saturday night. A preview of what was to come was provided by his 37-yard touchdown reception on the opening drive of the game.

As Ohio State’s Jim Tressel era came to an end, Buckeyes supporters became irritated with the program’s growing lack of the top players who were joining the SEC’s top teams. After Urban Meyer arrived, that changed, and Ryan Day has kept it that way.

SEC mainstays like Tennessee are currently attempting to catch up to OSU.
