The network announced that renowned analyst Lee Corso will retire from ESPN’s premier “College GameDay” program in August, marking the end of an era in college football.
On August 30 of this year, Corso will make his final appearance on the show. On August 7, he turns 90. In a statement made public by ESPN, Corso stated: “My family and I will be forever indebted for the opportunity to be part of ESPN and College GameDay for nearly 40 years,”
“I have a treasure of many friends, fond memories and some unusual experiences to take with me into retirement.”
With his thoughts and predictions about the games, particularly the “headgear pick” he makes prior to games, Corso has become a fixture of every college football Saturday.
Kirk Herbstreit talks about Lee Corso
Since 1996, Kirk Herbstreit has joined Corso on College GameDay. In a statement, Herbstreit stated: “Coach Corso has had an iconic run in broadcasting, and we’re all lucky to have been around to witness it,”.
“He has taught me so much throughout our time together, and he’s been like a second father to me. It has been my absolute honor to have the best seat in the house to watch Coach put on that mascot head each week.”
He is no longer featured for the whole three-hour show and missed five games during the 2022 football season due to health concerns. Corso, who has been a featured analyst on the GameDay program since its beginning in 1987, had a stroke in 2009 that left him partially paralyzed and necessitated a week-long hospital stay after three days of intensive care.
For a month following the incident, Corso was unable to speak due to the stroke. Many of his appearances on the show have been scripted since he went back on the air.
