Gunna, along with Thug and 26 others were arrested back in May in a sweeping gang indictment that asserted that the YSL collective is in actuality a violent criminal street gang that has committed multiple murders, shootings, and carjackings over the period of a decade.
In a practice that ignited ample debate, prosecutors drew on the artists’ lyrics as a means of claiming that their alleged gang activity was being promoted in their music and covertly on social media too.
Following the arrests, many attempts by Gunna’s legal team were made to secure his release. All of which were to no avail.
That changed moments ago, though, when the performer took what is referred to as an Alford plea – a move that permits a defendant to make a formal admission of guilt while still maintaining their innocence.
Per a statement from Gunna, he’s proceeding as such “to end my personal ordeal.”
The pact sees the 29-year-old sentenced to five years with one served in prison; the one-year sentence has been revised to time served, with the four remaining years now suspended. Instead, Gunna will be subject to special conditions and serve 500 hours of community service.
As of writing, his attorneys say his release will take place within a matter of hours.
Given the high-profile nature of the case, as well as the sheer number of other parties accused, onlookers have questioned whether his release was in exchange for testimony about others such as Young Thug.
Gunna says no. Pretty emphatically, at that. For, the rest of his statement read:
“While I have agreed to always be truthful, I want to make it perfectly clear that I have NOT made any statements, have NOT been interviewed, have NOT cooperated, have NOT agreed to testify or be a witness for or against any party in the case and have absolutely NO intention of being involved in the trial process in any way.”
The musician kicked off the year by topping the Billboard 200 with his album ‘DS4Ever.’
