With his remarks regarding the big man for the New York Knicks, retired NBA guard Gilbert Arenas has fueled the flames of criticism directed at Karl-Anthony Towns‘ postseason defense.

In a Gil’s Arena segment about the Knicks’ defeat to the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals, co-host Josiah Johnson mentioned recent rumors that the players in New York had been dissatisfied with Towns’ defensive play and communication errors.

Johnson stated, quoting anonymous teammates who claimed Towns failed to understand the significance of the team’s defensive plans:

“Too often Towns executed incorrect coverages without communicating why he did it,”

Johnson then inquired: “Is KAT being unfairly targeted for his defense?”

Arenas gave a personal critique in response. Arenas stated: “Targeted by the players? Yes. He’s targeted by all offensive players,” “It’s his physical makeup… Long legs, short torso, big ass feet. There’s nothing he can do.”

“He’s built like a whole f*cking b*tch. Yeah..He’s built like a female. He’s built like a girl! He has girl hips! He’s like a full WNBA player!”

“He’s not built to play. He can’t play pick-and-roll defense, he doesn’t have the body to do it… It is great for how he plays offense, but we’ve all played against defenders who just can’t guard anybody because of how they are built.”

Before the 2024–25 season began, Towns, 29, was moved to the Knicks, where he averaged 24.4 points and 12.8 rebounds in 72 games. In a Knicks uniform, he produced a number of remarkable offensive performances, including several games with 40 points and one in December that won him Eastern Conference Player of the Month.

He helped New York make it to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2000 during the postseason, averaging 21.4 points and 11.6 rebounds across 18 games.

After the team’s playoff exit, stories surfaced that expressed dissatisfaction within the organization with Towns’ defensive performance, despite his offensive output.
