Fisk University, The First HBCU To Have Their Gymnastic Team Compete At NCAA Level, Gets Docuseries Treatment + Lil Wayne’s Funny Reaction To Deion Sanders’ University Of Colorado Tour

Fisk University made HERstory earlier this year by becoming the first HBCU gymnastics team to compete at an NCAA event. Now, they have a docuseries in the works. Deets on their new show, plus Lil Wayne’s funny reaction during his tour of the University of Colorado’s football locker room with head coach Deion Sanders inside… Fisk University became the first historically black college or university to compete in gymnastics at the NCAA level last month. And, get this, the team was only formed 14 months ago. "It feels really cool," top recruit Morgan Price told ESPN. "We have a lot of eyes on us because we are the first and because we are making history, so it's just so exciting to be a part of the first team ever." Morgan Price (captured in the clip above) competed in all four individual events, earning the meet's highest score (9.9) on the vault.  Naimah Muhammad is the first Muslimah to wear tights in a NCAA gymnastics competition. According to Cromartie, when he questioned her about why she wasn't considering attending his alma mater, she responded that there wasn't a gymnastics program there. The program quickly advanced under the direction of coach Corrinne Tarver, the first Black gymnast to capture the NCAA all-around championship in 1989, with five-star recruit Morgan Price setting the bar when she switched her commitment from Arkansas to Fisk. Now, the newly formed gymnastics team is getting the docuseries treatment! According to Deadline, the Nashville school and its team will now be the subject of a docuseries from filmmaker Deborah Riley Draper and wiip. The site reports: Flipped (w/t) will follow college gymnastics’ only all BIPOC team as they navigate the pressures of their first season while challenging the stereotypes and norms in women’s athletics. With no university gym of their own, Coach Corrinne Tarver and her gymnastics team at Fisk University, consisting primarily of first-year college students, aim to take on the best in NCAA gymnastics without mitigating or changing who they are as women of color.  The series features access to the coaches, student athletes, parents, and administrators at Fisk University and the trials and triumphs of HBCU sports. The team, which included several Division-I athletes who de-committed from high-profile programs, took the mat at the 2023 Super 16 gymnastics invitational in Las Vegas, NV earlier this month with 17-year-old Morgan Price, a Fisk University freshman, competing in all four individual events, earning the meet’s highest score (9.9) on the vault. Deborah Riley Draper, director of Olympic Pride, American Prejudice, and Robin Lyon, CEO of Baller Alert Films, originated the project. Given that Wayne is a huge sports fan, Coach Prime gave the rapper an exclusive tour of his new work environment. And, as you can see, Weezy was impressed.
