As widely reported, the Olympic medalist was arrested in February for possession of less than 1 gram of marijuana oil in Moscow.
After six months of incarceration, she was officially convicted of drug smuggling in August and sentenced to 9-years in prison.
Legal reps for the basketball athlete argued that her punishment and crime were not on an equal footing.
The goal was to secure her release from prison or at least, reduce her sentence.
However, the judge did not agree, rejected the appeal, and upheld both the conviction and prison term.
Griner was not at the hearing physically but appeared via video and looked visibly upset.
US President Joe Biden has promised to “continue to work tirelessly” to secure her freedom.
