Chris Kluwe, a former NFL punter, was detained and escorted out of a Southern California City Council meeting on Tuesday after objecting to a plan to have a plaque at a local library that would have referenced Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” campaign.
Plans to add a commemorative plaque to honor the library’s 50th anniversary were approved earlier this month by the Huntington Beach Community and Library Services Commission. The Huntington Beach City Council had to provide its final clearance for the plaque’s design, which featured two American flags, the names of current council members and other city officials, and an acrostic reading: “Magical. Alluring. Galvanizing. Adventurous.”

Kluwe, who has lived in Huntington Beach for 15 years, was among the locals who were outraged by the plaque right away. Kluwe, a former Minnesota Vikings punter, expressed his thoughts on what Trump’s MAGA movement represents in an internet video of his comments:
“MAGA stands for trying to erase trans people from existence. MAGA stands for resegregation and racism. MAGA stands for censorship and book bans. MAGA stands for firing air traffic controllers while planes are crashing. MAGA stands for firing the people overseeing our nuclear arsenal. MAGA stands for firing military veterans and those serving them at the VA, including canceling research on veteran suicide. MAGA stands for cutting funds to education, including for disabled children … MAGA stands for hate, and fear, and the idea that we should have a king instead of co-equal branches of government.”

Before calling MAGA a “Nazi movement,” Kluwe also described it as “profoundly corrupt” and “unmistakably anti-democracy.” He said, “You may have substituted a red hat for a Swastika, but that is what it is,” to the cheers of some members of the audience.
After declaring that he would “engage in the time-honored American tradition of peaceful civil disobedience,” Kluwe concluded his speech and walked up to the council members taking their seats on the dais.
