They don’t call her the Songbird Supreme for nothing.
When it comes to Hot 100 stats, Mariah Carey reigns supreme and you’d be hard pressed to find anyone who can match or surpass her seemingly insurmountable feats.
Beyond being the only solo artist in the 65-year history to have captured 19 #1 hits, she’s also the only artist to have topped the tally in four distinct decades. Elsewhere, she’s known as the first female act to debut at #1 (1995’s ‘Fantasy‘), the first act overall to have their first 5 solo singles reach #1, and she holds the title for most cumulative weeks at #1 (93 and counting).
And while those accomplishments are just the tip of the iceberg, one of the shiniest jewels in her Billboard crown was being one of two artists to lay claim to charting at least one top 10 hit every year for over a decade.
This week, she learned a third act seems poised to join that fold: The Weeknd.
Peruse of the Hot 100 sees The Weeknd (born Abel Tesfaye) sitting at #8 as a featured act on the Future and Metro Boomin-led hit ‘Young Metro’ (found aboard their chart-topping ‘We Don’t Trust You‘ album).
Beyond marking Tesfaye’s historic 18th top 10 hit on the all-genre tally, the positioning extended his streak of nabbing a placement in the chart region every year since 2014 (a total of 11 years). This makes him the first artist this century to achieve the feat.
Before him, Carey was the artist who boasted the feat when she landed a top 10 smash every year from 1990-2001 (12 years). She is tied in Hot 100 history books with Prince who catapulted an entry into the tally’s topmost dectet every year from 1983-1994 (12 years).
Unlike Prince and Abel, however, Mariah is the only act who can boast placing a #1 hit every year for 12 years (1990-2001).
