Trump Administration Suspends Visa Bond Requirements For Some World Cup Fans

The Trump administration is suspending visa bond requirements for some international fans traveling to the United States for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, easing a possible upfront cost for eligible ticket holders from several qualifying countries.

The change applies to nationals of competing World Cup countries who bought official FIFA World Cup tickets by April 15, opted into the FIFA Priority Appointment Scheduling System, known as FIFA PASS, and meet all other requirements for a U.S. visitor visa, according to the U.S. State Department.

The waiver also covers athletes and team members from competing countries, including coaches, necessary support staff, and immediate relatives, if they qualify for the visa. The visa bond program may require some B1/B2 visitor visa applicants to post a bond of $5,000, $10,000, or $15,000 before traveling to the United States. The State Department said regular visa screening and vetting will still apply before any visa is issued, meaning the World Cup exemption removes the bond requirement for eligible travelers but does not guarantee visa approval.

World Cup Ticket Holders From Five Countries Get Visa Bond Relief

The visa bond suspension currently affects eligible fans from five World Cup-qualified countries that are also covered by the State Department’s visa bond program. The Associated Press identified those countries as Algeria, Cape Verde, the Ivory Coast, Senegal, and Tunisia. Reuters also reported that the waiver applies to fans from those five countries who purchased FIFA World Cup tickets and registered through FIFA PASS by April 15.

The State Department’s broader visa bond policy applies to citizens or nationals traveling on passports issued by countries identified by the Department. Under that policy, a consular officer may require a bond after determining that an applicant is otherwise eligible for a B1/B2 visitor visa. The department says the bond amount is set during the visa interview and must be paid only through the official U.S. government Pay.gov system after a consular officer gives the applicant instructions. The agency also states that paying a visa bond does not guarantee visa approval.

The World Cup waiver does not remove the standard U.S. visa process. Eligible fans must still complete the visitor visa application process unless they qualify for another travel pathway. The State Department says no visa is issued until a consular officer completes screening and determines that the applicant meets U.S. legal requirements. That distinction is important for travelers planning around the tournament, since FIFA PASS offers access to prioritized visa interview appointments but does not replace the visa application.

FIFA states that the FIFA PASS is a voluntary opt-in system created for World Cup ticket holders who need a U.S. visa. The system allows verified ticket holders to access priority visa interview appointments before the tournament. The program was developed in collaboration with the U.S. Department of State, especially for fans facing longer visa interview wait times.

What The Visa Bond Suspension Means Before The World Cup

The 2026 FIFA World Cup begins June 11 in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with 48 teams playing across 16 host cities. The United States will host most matches, so visa access remains a major issue for international fans traveling to the tournament. The bond requirement drew attention as it could add thousands of dollars in upfront costs for some travelers.

The suspension limits the burden for eligible World Cup ticket holders while keeping the regular visitor visa process in place. The Associated Press reported that about 250 fans were initially believed to be affected, though that number could change as more fans buy tickets and apply for visas.
