Roger Goodell has a problem. Given the numbers, we might say a big one. Despite a slight retreat during the 2024 season, the NFL continues to dominate the broadcast landscape. According to Front Office Sports, the league’s broadcast networks combined drew an average of 17.5 million viewers per game.
Despite being a huge figure, that represents a 2% drop from the 2023 campaign. 2024’s numbers are still higher than 2022’s because the league recorded a 7% rise in viewership last season, reaching 17.9 million viewers per game. Regardless of whether it was sports-related or not, the 2024 campaign’s ratings were still far higher than those of any other domestic television show.
Amazon reported an average of 13.2 million views for its Thursday Night Football programming, an 11% increase from the previous year. Those figures rise by 13% when its Black Friday game is included.
The stunning numbers behind the NFL’s decline in viewership
On average, 21.6 million people watched Sunday Night Football on NBC, a 1% increase over 2023. In the meantime, SNF’s average viewership on Peacock and NBCSports.com increased by 38% from 2023 to 2.2 million per game.
This year, ESPN had its second-best season in 24 years of broadcasting Monday Night Football, with an average of 15 million viewers across all NFL games. That figure represents a 14% decrease from 2023, which has shown out to be a significant anomaly. But a lot of MNF games were broadcast on ABC in ’23, which helped explain why there were so many last season.
For all NFL games, Fox’s broadcasts averaged 18.4 million viewers, a 3% decrease. Fox NFL Sunday was the most-watched pregame show for the 31st consecutive season. When Netflix debuted its NFL broadcast on Christmas, their hallmark doubleheader averaged over 24 million viewers.
Although CBS has not released its season-ending audience figures, FOS reports that the network had a 1% decline in viewership at an average of 19.2 million per game at the end of the year.
In total, 70 of the top 100 broadcasts in the US for 2024 were attributed to the league.
