A complaint against the Phoenix Mercury alleges that Sophie Cunningham, a former standout player for the Missouri women’s basketball team, had an affair with Josh Bartelstein, the team’s CEO, while she was a member of the Phoenix Mercury.

A message posted to her X account on Wednesday referred to the lawsuit’s claim as “false accusations.”

Cunningham’s name appears in a complaint that former Suns security director Gene Traylor filed against the team, claiming retribution, harassment, and discrimination. The case was initially published by ESPN, but it does not specifically target Cunningham.

The lawsuit alleges that the Suns tried to fire Traylor by appointing Cornelius Craig as the vice president of security and risk management, according to Front Office Sports. Craig is accused of acting strangely in the complaint, including disclosing information regarding a supposed affair between Bartlestein and Cunningham, a former Phoenix Mercury player.

Traylor claims that Craig was telling people that Josh Bartelstein was “(expletive)ing Sophie Cunningham,” according to the Indianapolis Star, which was able to receive a copy of the lawsuit.
