Serena Williams, Makes a Daring NFL Move

NFL fans are raving about what Serena Williams is serving up off the tennis court. According to reports, the 23-time Grand Slam champion and her spouse, Alexis Ohanian, a co-founder of Reddit, have put their best foot forward in an attempt to gain a share in the NFL’s future professional flag football league.

Williams has been a Miami Dolphins minority owner since 2009. This move has everyone buzzing about her next big play, especially since flag football is scheduled to be a part of the 2028 Olympics.

Williams is no stranger to the world of sports ownership; she has shares in the Los Angeles Golf Club, the Dolphins, and Angel City FC in addition to a recent investment in the Toronto Tempo of the WNBA.

After conversing with WNBA player Caitlin Clark and Eli Manning at the NFL’s Annual Meeting in Palm Beach on March 31, she said on Instagram, “I love the future of women, don’t you?”

Her focus on women’s sports on that panel appears to have ignited a spark, as she is now embracing the NFL’s flag football initiative. During the meeting, Commissioner Roger Goodell commented, “It’s clear there’s a lot of interest in a pro flag league,” implying that Serena’s bid was one of ten that were coming in.

Why play flag football? With that Olympic nod, it’s blowing up—imagine less padding, more speed, and a worldwide stage. Last week, NFL executive Jeff Miller told reporters, “Flag football is a high priority of ours,” highlighting its appeal to both men and women.
