Rich Paul Claims He Didn’t Believe LeBron James’ Lakers Will Win a Championship

Since February, when the Purple and Gold made a blockbuster trade with the Mavericks to acquire Luka Doncic, the LA Lakers have been the most talked-about club. LeBron James‘ dreams of winning a fifth ring were dashed in May when the ravenous Minnesota Timberwolves defeated LA in the first round. Rich Paul was not surprised by that, even if many others might have been.

During a visit on The Haynes Briefs Show, Paul, one of the most well-known sports agents in the world, talked about his client LeBron having Gentleman’s washed.

The 44-year-old CEO of Klutch Sports attempted to illustrate, among other things, how the public’s perception of a series’ outcome is influenced by a team’s star power.

He said,  “I think people really focus on the more popular names and don’t really dissect the team aspect of it,”

Paul realized that the Lakers were in trouble when he broke down their game against the Wolves in the first round. He said: “It was clear right away that that was the worst matchup for them,”

Paul’s statement was more of a spoiler than a prediction. Despite having LeBron and Luka, he later stated that he never believed the Lakers would win a championship this year.

He went on to say that championship-caliber clubs have resources that can always assist the team get stronger, draft capital, and space in their salary cap: “I really didn’t think that the roster for the Lakers was anywhere close to a championship type roster. That’s not making excuses. That’s just a fact. It’s very hard to build a team for today and tomorrow.” 

Now that the Lakers were completely outplayed by the Wolves, it’s simple to agree with Paul. The Wolves hammered LA in the paint because they didn’t have a genuine 5. Pushing the much smaller Lakers around and establishing his shooting comfort zone were two of Julius Randle’s many highlights.
