Seven months after tying Chris Brown‘s record for most Platinum-certified hits in the history of American music (among male singers), The Weeknd has taken the baton from the R&B bad boy thanks to a slew of recent certifications.
Taking to press Thursday (June 20), the RIAA revealed a handful of the Canadian hitmaker’s singles had their certification statuses updated.
See the full list below.
Diamond
- ‘Save Your Tears’ (Single)
- ‘Die for You’ (Single)
Platinum
- ‘Popular’ (Single)
- ‘One of the Girls’ (Single)
While the Diamond certifications made The Weeknd (born Abel Tesfaye) the vocalist with the most Diamond-certified hits, ‘Popular’ and ‘Girls’ have upped his career count of Platinum-certified songs to 38 – breaking Brown’s record for most hits of that caliber among male singers.
For context, “Platinum” and “Diamond” denote sales of 1 million and 10 million units in the United States respectively.
Chris, once the most Gold and Platinum-awarded male vocalist in the organization’s 71-year history (for singles), holds on to the title for the former. Among all acts, only Drake (80), Kanye West (51), Taylor Swift (49), Post Malone (45), Rihanna (45), Eminem (41), Beyonce (40), and Morgan Wallen (39) have more Platinum hits than Tesfaye and Brown.
Collectively, the sales updates increase Abel’s career-wide sales to 126 million in the U.S. – extending his record as the best-selling Black male singer in the history of recorded singles.
When all Black acts are considered, only Drake (244 million), Rihanna (183 million), and West (160.5 million) can boast higher cumulative single sales.
