New Study Reveals The Riskiest States For Solo Travel In America

As solo travel continues to dominate the tourism industry with millennials and Generation Z leading the charge, new research has uncovered alarming safety disparities across United States destinations for those venturing alone. According to a study released by Silver Law Firm and reported by the New York Post, New Mexico ranks as the most dangerous state for solo travelers. New Mexico scored a concerning 0.00 on the safety index, while Massachusetts holds the title of the safest state with a perfect score of 100.00.

The research analyzed data from the FBI, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, and other official sources. It evaluated states based on violent crime rates, property crime statistics, road safety metrics, emergency service accessibility, and transportation infrastructure quality.

Most Dangerous States For Solo Travelers

New Mexico’s dismal safety score stems from its vast rural areas with limited cellular coverage and sparse gas stations, creating hazardous conditions for those traveling alone. The state’s popularity among outdoor enthusiasts contrasts sharply with its high rates of violent crime, property crime, and vehicle accidents.

Attorney Elliot Silver said, “Solo travelers face unique vulnerabilities. When something goes wrong, you don’t have backup,” as reported by the New York Post.

Arkansas follows closely as the second-most dangerous state, with a safety score of 10.39, while Tennessee ranks third at 13.68. Despite Tennessee being home to popular tourist destinations like Nashville and Memphis, travelers are warned to exercise particular caution when venturing beyond metropolitan areas. The Shreveport Times reports that Louisiana ranks seventh among the most dangerous states for solo travelers, with a solo safety score of 27.4.

Safest Destinations For Solo Adventurers

Massachusetts secured the top spot for solo travel safety, thanks to its perfect score driven by relatively low crime rates, excellent road infrastructure, and compact geography. The state earned its high ranking due to “excellent road infrastructure and a dense population, meaning tourists have easy access to help if needed.” Its compact size and fewer stretches of isolated highways provide safer conditions for solo travelers.

New Jersey, Rhode Island, and New York ranked second, third, and fourth, respectively. New York’s high ranking comes as a surprise to many, as its emergency access and robust transportation infrastructure contribute to traveler safety. The top ten safest states also include Illinois, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Connecticut, and New Hampshire.
