New Report Reveals The Best Coffee Cities In America — Seattle Slips To No. 5

Portland, Oregon, has claimed the top spot as the United States’ premier coffee city, according to a new report released by WalletHub. The financial services company evaluated the 100 largest cities nationwide across 12 distinct metrics designed to measure “coffee lover-friendliness,” including the density of highly-rated coffee establishments, affordability, and local coffee culture. Portland earned a score of 71.09 out of 100, securing its position at the top of the rankings.
WalletHub’s research team developed a multifaceted evaluation system to determine which American cities truly excel in providing exceptional coffee experiences. The study examined factors including “the average price per pack of coffee in each destination,” household spending on coffee, and coffee shop accessibility. Data was collected from numerous credible sources, including the U.S. Census Bureau, Council for Community and Economic Research, U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Google Trends, Yelp, and others, according to The Manual.
Portland distinguished itself through several key metrics, most notably its “extremely high number of affordable coffee shops that are rated at least 4.5 stars out of 5,” as noted in the WalletHub report. The city also boasts the highest number of coffee and tea manufacturers per capita in the country, further solidifying its reputation as a coffee haven.
