“Chocolate for a chocolate dude”: Gary Payton’s monochromatic Heat Gala look
On Feb. 2, the Miami Heat celebrated the 20th anniversary of their 2006 NBA championship at the team’s annual fundraising gala, reuniting members of that roster with the current squad.
And what does one wear for a night like that? If you’re Gary Payton, aka “Mr. Mean,” you go monochrome: “chocolate for a chocolate dude.”
Payton’s coordinated look isn’t new. During his playing days — notably his year in Boston — he favored matching Dickies suits in every colorway. Former teammate Kendrick Perkins once recalled how serious he was about them, making Perkins iron the suits nightly on the road.
“He always had them Dickies suits — gray, blue, black, white — creased up,” Perkins said on All the Smoke.
For the gala, though, the Dickies gave way to head-to-toe Louis Vuitton — a luxe upgrade Payton thinks puts him in the night’s best-dressed conversation.
Watch as Payton gets ready with Andscape, reflects on the reunion, and sizes up the night’s style competition.
