Mike Tomlin’s Verbal Barrage To George Pickens Goes Viral

When quarterback Russell Wilson threw an interception one minute into the Pittsburgh Steelers’ opening drive of Sunday’s AFC North game against the Cincinnati Bengals, the team’s spirits were low.

As he crossed the sidelines, Steelers receiver George Pickens appeared to shoulder a large portion of the blame for the turnover. Coach Mike Tomlin appeared to inspire him in a video that went viral, and it paid off when Pickens scored a 17-yard touchdown on the team’s subsequent drive.

Mike Tomlin’s message to George Pickens

Fans were able to hear Tomlin telling his star receiver to keep his head up when the audio of this conversation was eventually made public on Tuesday.

Holding Pickens’s head, Tomlin uttered: “Hey bro, it can’t define us today. I need you to stay with me,” “This s— ain’t gonna decide the outcome of the game. … Look at me. You aight? All right, let’s go.”

Despite the Steelers’ 44–38 victory, Pickens’ on-field behavior during the game became the focus of a lot of conversation. He received two expensive fines, one for mocking the Bengals’ sideline and another for imitating the use of a gun during a party. During his post-game press conference, Tomlin stated that Pickens needs to “grow up”

For the HBO debut of the new season of Hard Knocks on Tuesday night, Tomlin was mic’d throughout the whole game. In the first game of the season, the Steelers coach immediately won over the fans.
