As the NFL pushes to play on Christmas Day, a date that sports fans usually connect with NBA games, LeBron James delivered a message to the league on Wednesday.
Following the Los Angeles Lakers’ exciting 115-113 victory over the Golden State Warriors, James said to ESPN’s Lisa Salters as he gestured toward the court before rushing to the locker room: “I love the NFL, I love the NFL but Christmas is our day,”
This year, Netflix and the NFL, which has played a game on Christmas Day since 2020, agreed that the streaming behemoth would exclusively show at least one of the NFL’s games on the holiday until 2026.
How right is LeBron James about the NBA being bigger on Christmas than the NFL?
According to reports, Netflix paid the NFL about $150 million (roughly $75 per game) to broadcast this year’s doubleheader, which featured Beyoncé’s halftime show during the Baltimore Ravens’ convincing victory over the Houston Texans and a pre-taped Mariah Carey performance of “All I Want For Christmas Is You.”
Since the league’s second season in 1947, the NBA has held its games on Christmas Day, and since 1995, the reigning NBA champions have participated in at least one match.
NBA analyst Mike Breen’s famous calls, superstars James and Warriors point guard Stephen Curry’s outstanding performances, and Curry’s game-winning 3-pointer with 6.3 seconds remaining were all highlights of Wednesday’s Lakers vs. Warriors game. After making a game-winning layup with one second left, Lakers shooting guard Austin Reaves would later make Golden State fans snicker.
On Christmas Day, he became just the tenth player in league history to record a triple-double. After the game, James was questioned about his past on-court conflicts with Curry. He cited the Warriors star’s recent statement that it’s acceptable to accept that his career’s “end is near” because it gives him the chance to “enjoy what’s happening right now.”
James, who on Monday marks his 40th birthday, stated: “And for us, we don’t know how many times we’re going to be able to have this matchup, we don’t know how many times we’re going to be able to step on the floor,”
