The fallout from Kehlani‘s criticism of Israel and vocal support for Palestine continues to snowball.
Just days after the 5x GRAMMY nominee was dropped from a Cornell University musical event for her “anti-Israel sentiments,” her name was axed from inclusion in New York City’s annual SummerStage concert series.
Originally slated to headline a June 26 concert titled ‘Pride with Kehlani,’ event organizers cited concerns from the administration of New York City Mayor Eric Adams about the “controversy surrounding Cornell University’s decision to cancel Kehlani’s concert at the University, as well as security demands in Central Park and throughout the City for other Pride events during that same period.”
Said security concerns led them to cancel the ‘After Hours’ singer’s show.
“We strongly and emphatically believe in artistic expression of all kinds,” the organization wrote in the announcement posted on Instagram. “However, the safety and security of our guests and artists is of the utmost importance and in light of these concerns, the concert has been cancelled.”
Kayla Mamelak, a rep from Adams’ camp, supported the decision.
“We look forward to an exciting lineup of other performances this summer,” she wrote in an email to the Associated Press after saying the administration was “grateful” for the City Parks Foundation, the nonprofit that organizes SummerStage, for their swift action.
And while Kehlani has not offered an official statement in response to the nixing, she did take to Instagram to offer a reaction.
“I just found that one out on Instagram by the way,” she posted on Instagram Stories.
