When Travis Kelce returns next season, the Kansas City Chiefs have a strategy in place to handle his workload. The 35-year-old Kelce put retirement talks on hold after declaring he’s ready for another season.
In his illustrious NFL career, he just finished one of his least productive years. According to a Fox Sports story, the Chiefs had a plan for the tight end the previous season.
However, injuries caused their plans to go apart, so Kelce had to take on a bigger role. According to Fox columnist Harry McKenna: “Travis Kelce wasn’t himself on Sundays – not every week.”
“Behind the scenes, practice was getting harder and more painful. “The Chiefs plan to reduce his workload went belly-up when injuries hit.”
The report from Fox says the decision to sign the likes of Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, DeAndre Hopkins and Marquise “Hollywood” Brown was to take the pressure off Kelce. During his 12-year career, Kelce’s 823 receiving yards was his lowest total. Additionally, his touchdown total of just three was one less than his previous low of four in 2016.
“Definitely, time has taken its toll,” the Fox article cited an AFC executive as saying.
“Doesn’t run really well anymore.” “You rarely just see him get open within the design of the play.” “But he has the special connection with the QB to uncover when s*** breaks down.”
Kelce admitted that his choice to retire was influenced by the toll his body has undergone.
