Jalen Brunson and Rick Remember Having Violent 1v1s

Rick Brunson, Jalen Brunson‘s father, was recently the host of the “Roommates Show.” The Brunsons discussed Hart and Jalen’s one-on-one matches after discussing their early years.

Co-host Matt Hillman questioned Rick if their experiences would align after bringing up JB’s discussion of the first time he defeated his father in a one-on-one match. The 52-year-old retorted, “They definitely don’t.” “I don’t know if he ever beat me, to be honest.”

Josh and Jalen were both amused by the typical parental response. He wasn’t a scrub himself, though, to be fair to Rick.

It is easy to see the 52-year-old defeating his All-NBA son when he was younger because he played nine seasons of NBA basketball and a few years in international leagues. Rick would acknowledge, though, that he didn’t defeat Jalen because of his skill.

Jalen Brunson speaks about his dad cheating

He revealed that throughout their one-on-one matches, his kid seldom ever kept score. Brunson Sr., the only scorekeeper for the two, admitted to cheating when JB was unable to recall the scores.

Rick remembered in jest. It’s difficult to determine whether Jalen was already aware of his father’s antics because he didn’t reply to the story: “He doesn’t even realize, he probably beat me more than what he thought. Cause he didn’t know the score. And I just cheated. ‘I’m up 5-4 that’s game,’

Brunson Sr. went on to describe how he realized his son had All-Star potential after one such game: “So I kill him, and he mad, like angry. And he’s like, ‘Dad, all you do is f***ing cheat!’…I was like if you cuss again, Imma whoop you. But then I walked away, I was like okay, he got something inside of him, some fight,

After the narrative, JB would add that, in fact, he had beaten his father in his junior year of high school. Although the two were still at odds over the facts, it was now quite evident how much Brunson Sr. contributed to his son’s talent development.

Earlier this year, while Jalen was on “All the Smoke” with Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson, they discussed an old footage of his father exercising with him.

The two-time NCAA champion said, “It was more mental than anything.” He went on to say that even though his father was a coach at the University of Virginia at the time, he would never bring JB to the air-conditioned gym there.
