In the current NBA environment, three-point explosions are the norm. However, the emphasis on spacing and deep shot defense has diminished the impact of interior defenders. Gilbert Arenas thinks that instead of making double-digit three-point shots, players today might inflate their numbers if they focused more on scoring in the paint.
The former Washington Wizard highlighted how players may attack the hoop with less resistance when defense is always switched on during an appearance on the Straight Game Podcast. The three-time All-Star then highlighted how smaller players are frequently left to act as rim protectors because to the dearth of Shaq-like big guys who primarily play in the paint.
Gilbert Arenas describes what tactics one must use in-game today
Arenas said, describing how getting buckets inside is now easier than ever: “You driving and the guy tryna block you is 6-[foot]-4. You got Charles Barkley with no ups,”
The 42-year-old asserted that modern players might score 40 points per game if they just placed less focus on the deep ball because there is so much more operating area inside.
Arenas went on: “You’re looking at the game like, man… some of you guys can damn near average 40 if y’all just play the old style a little bit,” “You don’t need to shoot 14 threes, you can just go to the basket because there’s nobody there to actually stop you from it.”
Although teams still make more three-pointers than ever before, most players on modern lineups are designed to be able to play a variety of roles, making switching a far more practical defensive tactic than it was in previous decades. Even though two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo and other superstars spend most of their time in the paint, the Greek Freak’s 32.7 scoring average this season is the highest of his career.
In today’s switch-happy NBA, there are undoubtedly more opportunities to exploit smaller paint defenders, but 40 points per game still seems far away.
It’s not shocking to see the former guard attempt to persuade today’s players to avoid all the shots, as Arenas has frequently been a prominent critic of the NBA’s three-point mania.
