Forbes Crowns Erykah Badu the Greatest R&B Artist of All Time / Omits Megastars Like MJ, Whitney, Prince, R.Kelly, Luther, Aretha, Chris Brown, & Beyonce from List

Has American business and finance magazine Forbes written a critical check they couldn’t cash? R&B fanatics sure seem to think so.

The publication took a break from counting coins to count down who they deem the “25 Greatest R&B Artists of All Time,” crowning Queen of NeoSoul Erykah Badu the overall winner.

And while lovers of the genre’s leaders and veterans like Mariah Carey, Brandy, Jill Scott, Usher, Sade, and Anita Baker may have taken umbrage with where their favorites landed on the list (most of the aforementioned under relative newcomer SZA), their grumblings weren’t nearly as loud as fans of some of music history’s biggest names – many of whom were omitted from the tally.

Taking to press recently, Forbes’ unveiled its list of the 25 Greatest R&B Acts Ever.

And while the money mag did not clarify if there was any criteria to its ranking method other than editorial opinion, the list did include some expected names (Al Green, Usher, Badu, Carey, etc.) while throwing in surprising nods to D’Angelo, SWV, En Vogue, Xscape, TLC, John Legend, and Queen of Rock Tina Turner.

Glaringly absent were names like Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Gladys Knight, Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, R. Kelly, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Lauryn Hill, Alicia Keys, Luther Vandross, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Prince, Beyonce, Toni Braxton, and Chris Brown – much to the shock and awe of their respective fan bases.

The polarizing tally ignited quite the debate on Twitter – a discussion exacerbated after attracting attention from the likes of ‘The Breakfast Club.’
