Everything You Need to Know About Luxury Train Travel In Africa

There are beautiful trains all around the world, including in Africa. In what has been dubbed a “safari by rail,” train enthusiasts and those seeking a unique experience can embark on an incredible African adventure. Some train routes will take you to see one of the natural wonders of the world, Victoria Falls. Others take you on a journey exploring the untamed deserts of Namibia and a multi-night voyage across Southern Africa to Tanzania.
Train adventures in Africa can range from a short 48-hour journey to 16 days. Here’s what travelers should know before stepping onboard.
Train Operators In Africa

There are at least four train operators that offer luxury and signature train experiences in Africa. One of the most well-known operators is Rovos Rail. Known as “The Pride of Africa,” Rovos boasts a distinct vintage style, with routes that take passengers through South Africa, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, and beyond.
The Blue Train is a five-star luxury rail experience with shorter journeys between Pretoria and Cape Town. The “Palace on Wheels” offers shorter routes that usually last two or three days. However, there are also longer journeys for a week or more. During the holiday, Blue Train offers combination packages with local guided tours between game reserves on safaris in the Kruger Park Region, Victoria Falls, and even a Zambezi Sunset River Cruise.
Morocco’s Al-Boraq High-Speed Train is the fastest and first of its kind, running along Morocco’s Atlantic Coast. The double-decker train travels at an impressive speed of 186 mph, offering passengers two classes of service between Casablanca, Kenitra, Marrakech, Rabat, and Tangier.
Another experience worth highlighting is the Kruger Shalati, which doesn’t actually involve a moving train. The “train on the bridge” is permanently stationed on the historic Selati Bridge above the Sabie River. The Krugler Shalati also offers luxury accommodations, including an impressive viewing deck with an overhanging pool. There are two types of accommodations: the 24 Carriage Suites on the train, located on the Bridge, or the seven Bridge House Suites, situated adjacent to the bridge in a garden setting.
Notable Experiences Onboard
One of the most epic train journeys in Africa is Rovos’ 15-night and 16-night journeys that begin in South Africa and travel through Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Tanzania. The experiences onboard include overnight stays in hotels, bush walks on safaris, while navigating through the tunnels and viaducts of the jungled Udzungwa Mountains.
On the Blue Train, riders will discover the highlights of South Africa as they adventure to the top of Table Mountain and then down to meet the penguins of Boulders Bay before venturing off to the scenic Stellenbosch Valley winelands. A notable experience is the rail safari through Kruger National Park. It includes a full day for game viewing and the chance to see Africa’s Big Five.
All of these train experiences include exceptional dining options of gourmet meals. Chefs from South African operators partner with sommeliers, allowing riders to experience the region’s diverse viticultural offerings.
Practical Things To Know
While exciting, traveling by train in Africa requires some planning. Avoid booking at the last minute to ensure an optimal experience on luxury rails. It’s advisable to pack your items in a soft-top bag because they are easier to store.
Check with your train operator and local laws to determine if you are allowed to bring alcohol on your journey. Alcohol is included in the fare for Blue Train and Rovos Rail. Check with the train operator if you are interested in bringing your own spirits along.
The dress code for luxury train rides is smart casual, unless otherwise stated. Formal dinners, for example, require suits, ties, and cocktail attire, but it depends on your itinerary.
For routes in South Africa, the local currency, the rand, is the only accepted currency, excluding tips. Outside of South Africa, the US dollar is the preferred currency, and most stops accept all major credit cards. Rovos Rail recommends a gratuity of $10-$20 per guest per night, which is given to the train manager at the end of the journey.
Vaccinations depend on your route, but it’s generally advised to have the yellow fever vaccinations and malaria medications.
Be sure to pack enough entertainment, as the train prides itself on providing a digital detox. Rovos Rail does not have televisions, radios, or internet onboard, and cell phone reception is limited. Blue Train offers complimentary Wi-Fi in its Deluxe and Luxury Suites, as well as a television.
Train travel in Africa is more than transportation. It’s a fantastic way to experience Africa’s diversity and hospitality. Train routes offer an easy way to travel to various countries that can be more challenging than flying with airlines.
