Demetres Samuel Jr. Is Getting Labeled The “Next Travis Hunter” For Playing Cornerback And Wide Receiver

The focus is on this hot new player from Syracuse, Demetres Samuel Jr. This kid is only 16 years old, and he’s already making a name for himself on the football field. And not just in one position, he’s playing both cornerback and wide receiver. Talk about a double threat!

People are already comparing him to Travis Hunter, and that’s some big shoes to fill. But from what we’ve seen so far, this young gun has the skills and the potential to live up to the hype.

Now, some might say it’s too early to label him as the “Next Travis Hunter.” And hey, fair enough. But you can’t deny the talent and determination this kid brings to the game. He’s got speed, agility, and hey, he’s got hands like nobody’s business.

Like Hunter, the Syracuse freshman is set to impact both sides of the ball, playing cornerback and wide receiver. However, head coach Fran Brown advises patience, noting that Samuel’s two-way dominance may take time to develop.

The Florida native is defying expectations before even turning 17. A four-star recruit in the Class of 2025, Samuel left Heritage High School more than a year early to enroll at Syracuse. Now, at just 16 years old, he’s projected to start at cornerback while also seeing significant snaps at receiver. Brown sees something special in the 6-foot-1, 190-pound talent, and the excitement surrounding his potential is undeniable.

Samuel, who will turn 17 this week, was one of the top defensive backs in his class, ranking as a top-20 player at his position and a top-250 prospect nationally. Originally committed to Florida, he flipped to Syracuse after receiving 26 scholarship offers, including from Alabama, Texas A&M, and Auburn. Now, he’s turning heads in upstate New York.

Brown believes Samuel’s youth only adds to his ceiling. “He could be in high school probably becoming the No. 1 player in the country next year or top 10,” Brown said. “He’s doing a hell of a job at 16 years old, competing with guys at another level.”

Samuel’s athleticism has already earned him an expanded role in the Orange’s system. In spring practice, he rotated between defense and offense, with his neutral-colored pinny allowing him to take reps at both positions. Quarterback Michael Johnson, 24, laughed at celebrating Samuel’s upcoming birthday like one of his older teammates.

“He asked me, ‘You coming out for my birthday? Where we going?’ I was like, ‘Dude, you’re 17. Where we going? What you mean?’”

We are keeping an eye out for Demetres Samuel Jr. because he’s a rising star. Whether he can truly live up to being the “Next Travis Hunter” remains to be seen, but one thing’s for sure – this kid’s got potential.
