Danny Green Explains Why He Chose Anthony Edwards as the Next “Face of the NBA”

For more than ten years, the NBA has relied on the same players to represent the league, which has led many to choose the league’s next torchbearer. Before asking her NBA Today co-hosts who could take over, ESPN’s Malika Andrews listed several future Hall of Famers who have signaled that their retirement is imminent, including Stephen Curry, LeBron James, and Kevin Durant.

Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards was the first name Danny Green came up with during the conversation. The 23-year-old is the most qualified candidate to become the league’s biggest legend, according to the retiring sniper, who said: “If I had to put my money on it, I’d go Anthony Edwards… He’s made a name for himself, he’s personable, so the fans love him. He talks in the media; the interviews are funny. Everybody loves him.”

When the topic was posed to NBA expert Shams Charania, he was less certain of his answer. The 30-year-old listed a number of potential contenders, including the current NBA champion Jayson Tatum, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Luka Doncic, and Victor Wembanyama.

The ability of past “faces of the league” to win NBA Championships served as their foundation, Andrews then reminded the panel. The 29-year-old then asked if, should the Celtics win several championships in the upcoming years, Tatum will be the league’s unquestioned face.

Green stated, reiterating a sentiment that is prevalent in NBA media: “I would like to think so, but unfortunately in this world, you get punished for having a really great team and Jayson Tatum’s been overlooked a lot because of that,”

Tatum doesn’t need to dominate every game for Boston to win, unlike players like Luka Doncic or Nikola Jokic who don’t have the depth of the Celtics at their disposal. And that has damaged him in the MVP race as well as in a number of other categories. It appears that the discourse surrounding the “face of the league” will follow suit.
