Cynthia Erivo Could Make HISTORY at Tonight’s Golden Globes by Becoming the Second Black ‘Best Actress – Musical or Comedy’ Winner

At writing, Screen Queen Angela Bassett reigns as the only Black female actress who can boast ownership of the ‘Best Actress for Musical or Comedy’ Golden Globe in the ceremony’s 82-year history.

But – if industry analyst predictions are to be believed – the legendary performer will be soon joined in the exclusive winner’s club.

As ‘Wicked‘ fans wait with bated breath to see if the beloved blockbuster will capture Best Picture (Musical or Comedy), Cinematic & Box Office Achievement, or Best Supporting Actress (Ariana Grande) honors at tonight’s Golden Globe Awards (January 5), eyes will undoubtedly be glued to TVs to see if Cynthia Erivo nabs the Best Actress (Musical or Comedy) trophy for her portrayal of “Elphaba” in the film.

Already a TONY, GRAMMY, and EMMY Award-winning actress, should Cynthia collect the Golden Globe for her witchy performance she will become the second Black performer to ever do so following Bassett’s 1994 victory for her portrayal of Rock Queen Tina Turner in the now-classic biopic ‘What’s Love Go to Do With It?’

What’s more, a win for Erivo will make her a top contender to repeat the feat at the year’s Academy Award – a triumph that will complete her journey to becoming an EGOT if accomplished.

Coming as the fourth GG nomination of her career, Cynthia was previously nominated for 2020’s ‘Harriet‘ (Best Drama Actress and Best Original Song) as well as 2022’s ‘Genius: Aretha‘ (Best Actress – Miniseries) – losing all three.

The Golden Globes air live on CBS tonight starting at 8 p.m. ET. See the full list of nominees here.
