In Sunday afternoon’s game against the Denver Broncos, running back Jonathan Taylor of the Indianapolis Colts got loose for what appeared to be a 41-yard touchdown run. As it happened, he had possession of the ball for a mere 41 yards.
Taylor gently dropped the ball from his right hand as he was running toward the goal line in the third quarter. He was not being pressured. He simply left it.
We’ve seen this in the NFL before. However, it continues to occur somehow.

At first, officials declared the run to be a touchdown. Like it was a touchdown, Taylor danced. Officials reviewed the play and concluded that Taylor did not carry the ball across the goal line.
The ball left Taylor’s hands just short of the goal line, then fell into the end zone and out of bounds, as slow-motion verified. The play ended in a touchback and turnover, giving the Broncos the ball back with a 13-7 deficit instead of a score to give the Colts a 20-7 lead.
Jonathan Taylor talks about his major blunder
The Colts failed to score once again. After the turnover, the Broncos responded with 24 points in a row, winning 31–13 in a game that had major playoff ramifications. After the game, Taylor acknowledged his blunder. He said: “It just can’t happen, no matter the game, no matter the scenario,” “You can be up by 50, down by 50, playoff game, first game of the season, that should never happen.”
“I just know that we had six less points,” “I do know if I would’ve crossed that goal line with the ball, we would’ve had six more points. I don’t know how it would’ve played out after that. But I do know we would’ve had six more points.”
