Chart Check: Rihanna’s ‘Anti’ Becomes First Album By a Black Woman To Log Over 350 Weeks on the Billboard 200

On January 28, 2016, Pop megastar Rihanna introduced what would go on to be her most critically acclaimed album yet – ‘Anti.’

Living up to its title with a tracklist of tunes that not only went against the grain of what was popular on radio at the time but also her own discography, the opus was a critical polarizer at the time of its release – leading many to believe that ill reception would be reflected commercially.

Seven years later, Rih is having the last laugh.

Peruse of the refreshed Billboard 200 finds ‘Anti’ at #84 – 351 weeks after its #27 premiere there.  The stay is the longest any album by a Black female performer has ever enjoyed.

Currently listed as one of the best-performing projects of the millennium with 11 million copies sold to date, the news comes the very week the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) announced a slew of upgraded certifications for the LP’s hits including ‘Work,’ ‘Desperado,’ ‘Needed Me,’ and ‘Love on the Brain’ (as we reported here).

Extending its reign as one of the longest-running albums in the history of the Billboard 200 among all women, only Adele‘s ’21’ (547 weeks), Lana Del Rey‘s ‘Born To Die’ (467), and Taylor Swift‘s ‘1989’ (423 weeks),have accumulated more time on the tally.
