The Weeknd reigns atop the Billboard 200 with his new album ‘Hurry Up Tomorrow’ – and he does so with titan-sized numbers.
Full story below…
Preceded by singles such as ‘Timeless’ with Playboi Carti and the Anitta-assisted ‘São Paulo,’ the project has blasted past initial projections.
For, with the final numbers tallied, ‘Hurry Up Tomorrow’ debuts at #1 with a colossal 490,500 equivalent album units in the U.S.
The number serves as The Weeknd’s highest-ever launch on the coveted count and towers tall as the largest week for any album since Taylor Swift’s ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ debuted at #1 in May 2024 chart with 2.61 million.
While a strong streamer, The Weeknd’s sum was amassed largely via pure sales. Indeed, 359,000 units were accrued via this medium. Streaming units total 130,500 (equaling 171.5 million on-demand official streams of the songs on the LP).
The Weeknd left no stone unturned with the various configurations of the album he made available. This included but wasn’t limited to: eight vinyl variants, various CD incarnations, signed editions, cassettes, and merchandise bundles – the latter of which is credited in some corners for the surge past the initial forecast of 350,000.
A win is a win and congratulations are no doubt in order. But given the all-out physical push, it will be interesting to see what week 2 delivers commercially. In the here and now, though, Abel has cause to celebrate.
The chart-topping opening comes on the heels of the trailer debut for the ‘Hurry Up Tomorrow’ companion film, which sees The Weeknd star alongside Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan.
