Bill Belichick Admits That Before Joining UNC, He Sought Michael Jordan’s Approval

In the NFL, Bill Belichick is regarded as one of the best minds. But since it’s said that two brains are better than one, the seasoned strategist wanted to confer with some of his colleagues first, starting with Michael Jordan, the most well-known former Tar Heel, before approving North Carolina.

This year, Belichick has continued to make headlines. The six-time NFL champion has been in the news frequently, from his departure from the New England Patriots to his relationship with a woman fifty years younger.

The former Pats coach made news once more this week when he revealed he would take over as head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels. While fans and the media were caught off guard by the revelation, Belichick has disclosed that he did not take the move before to conversing with “His Airness.”

Michael Jordan And Bill Belichick’s Talk

Belichick disclosed during a news conference that he had conversations with some of North Carolina’s most well-known alumni. Along with Jordan, the coach acknowledged talking to former NFL players Julius Peppers and Lawrence Taylor before to saying “I do” to the Tar Heels.

Although Belichick did not elaborate on the discussions, he did guarantee that everyone was “very supportive.” He underlined:  “There’s been a ton of support, from ex-players and other UNC alums.” “This is a great brand and a great support system here. So I’m excited to spend more time with these people.”

Belichick’s work will not be simple. North Carolina had a dismal 2024–2025 season, finishing 12th in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a conference record of 3-5 and an overall record of 6–6.

But the strategist doesn’t mind putting in a little effort. Furthermore, even if he receives greater offers from NFL teams, he has previously stated that he has no intention of leaving the organization. Belichick remarked, “I didn’t come here to leave,” and then went to work.
