At UFC 309, the UFC heavyweight division saw its most action in months, but it was still far from sufficient. UFC veteran Ben Askren has called the division “annoying” as a result, citing the dearth of elite bouts between its best stars.
The heavyweight scene has left a pervasive air of ineptitude, with Jon Jones allegedly cherry-picking his opponents and Francis Ngannou no longer in the promotion. Despite Tom Aspinall’s vibrant presence, the division appears to be in a state of uncertainty, and the criticism is beginning to mount.
Should Jon Jones be more involved ?
In an interview with Demetrious Johnson on his YouTube channel, Askren said he had no idea what Jones’ situation was. Additionally, he likened matchmaking to wrestling, stating that in the latter sport, competitors would compete annually and there would be no disputes over who was the best.
“The one division that I think of right now that is super annoying is heavyweight. Jones won’t fight people. I don’t really know what his deal is. He only wants to fight Stipe. You got Aspinall, and you got Francis, who left the UFC. “
Askren continued by saying that he views Jones as inactive because he does not compete as frequently as a champion ought to. The 40-year-old went on to say that the world’s top heavyweight champion would always be a mystery because Ngannou is not affiliated with the UFC. Askren’s statements are accurate, but it appears that Jones, the first heavyweight champion, is on his side.
