A sequel to ‘A Different World’ is heading to Netflix.

Moments ago, it was confirmed that a new instalment of the 1987 sitcom has received a pilot order on the streamer.

The fresh chapter will center on Dwayne and Whitley’s daughter’s time at an HBCU.

In development since last summer, news of the pilot is being touted as a productive fruit of that process.

Netflix is renowned for its straight-to-order approach to series, so it’s of note that the ‘A Different World’ sequel is only the second show in the platform’s history to specifically receive a pilot order.

The pilot medium in comedy is often drawn on to ascertain cast chemistry, comedic timing, and other variables.

Helmed by writer/executive producer Felicia Pride, the ‘A Different World’ sequel is being executive produced by Debbie Allen, Mandy Summers, Tom Werner, Gina Prince-Bythewood, and Reggie Bythewood.

Notably, Werner, Prince-Bythewood, and Bythewood all creatively contributed to the original show.

A spinoff of ‘The Cosby Show,’ the series originally spotlighted the HBCU college life of Denise Huxtable (Lisa Bonet).

When Bonet left after the first season, the show shifted its focus to the lives of Whitley Gilbert-Wayne (Jasmine Guy), as well as math whiz Dwayne Cleophus Wayne (Kadeem Hardison).

‘A Different World’ ran for six seasons on NBC.
