Where Was HBO’s ‘Task’ Filmed? Tips For Exploring The Philadelphia Suburbs

HBO’s newest crime drama, “Task,” stars Mark Ruffalo as Tom Brandis, a priest turned trash collector who finds himself stuck between his past and present as he leads a task force to crack down on violent robberies in the community. The working-class suburbs surrounding Philadelphia are both the setting and filming locations for much of the show, giving it the authentic look and feel of that region.

Considering “Task” was shot on location, mostly in Delaware County, the setting becomes a character itself in the gritty drama series. If you want to see where the action takes place, consider visiting some of the iconic film locations on your next road trip or getaway. Seeing the Philly suburbs yourself and interacting with locals who bear the same recognizable accent as those in the show is a surefire way to connect you with the action and energy of the area.

Where Was ‘Task’ Filmed?

As CBS News reports, “Task” was largely filmed on location in and around Delaware County, Pennsylvania (often called “Delco”), which includes the cities and towns of Media, Chester, Newtown Square, Marcus Hook and the Ridley Township. Some of the key scenes were even filmed at some key civic and everyday settings, like the conversations shot in the Delaware County Courthouse.

Outside of Delco, some scenes from the new show were filmed in the natural environments surrounding the city of Philadelphia. Wissahickon Valley Park and Ridley Creek State Park offered their wooded and moody areas for several scenes that show the natural landscape in contrast with suburban life. Key Scenes: The trap house break-ins, robberies and resulting shootouts that are central to the plot were all shot within Delco. Per Time Out, the Delco Marcus Hook Community Center doubles as a police station and federal facility in the show, just as the Delaware County Courthouse in Media, Pennsylvania, is used for pivotal courtroom scenes throughout the series.

Best Time to Visit: Depending on what weather attracts you, you can visit Delco practically any time of year. Fall foliage will be at its peak from September to October, but numerous festivals and events take place throughout the summer as well. Expect a quieter city and some snowy days if you decide to visit anytime from December to March.

Transportation Options: The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) serves Delaware County via the Regional Rail, trolley, and light rail, and with numerous bus routes. Delco is also easily accessible by car from Interstate 476 and U.S. Route 13.

Much of the show’s domestic and interpersonal drama was filmed on the streets in Delco, which gives the show its authentic feel and grit. Some notable scenes include those that take place in the county courtrooms, the career fair at Neumann University’s Mirenda Center, the robberies at traphouses and the conversations had at the Marcus Hook Community Center. The towns of Aston, Upper Chichester, Marcus Hook and Ridley Township were all featured in the show, according to Sportskeeda.

History buffs will recognize the area as one of the oldest settlements in Pennsylvania. There were also a handful of notable battles fought on these grounds during the Revolutionary War, including the Battle of Brandywine in 1777. Time Out notes that Ridley Creek State Park is also featured in the series during many of the nature scenes, providing a break from the urban and suburban settings that dominate the show.

Things to Do: American Revolution historians will delight in visiting the Brandywine Battlefield Park on Fridays and Saturdays to learn about the largest single-day land battle of that time. You could also take a stroll through Ridley Creek State Park or Rose Tree County Park for a dose of nature.

Where to Eat: Tavola Restaurant + Bar in Springfield offers a full-service menu on a covered patio that overlooks the golf course and surrounding palm trees. The Clam Tavern is a local favorite, known for its delicious seafood and bar favorites.

Where to Stay: The Inn at Swarthmore, located on the scenic campus of Swarthmore College, is an easy train ride away from Central and is a favorite among individuals visiting for business meetings or weekend events. With unobstructed views of the Delaware River, the 1740 House is another possibility for those looking for a quiet getaway in a country inn. The living room is complete with an original fireplace from the 1800s, making it perfect for a chilly night in.

Ridley House On MacDade Boulevard Becomes Barnaby’s Bar

Key Scenes: In episode three, Lizzie (Alison Oliver) and Fabien Frankel (Anthony Grasso) stop by a biker bar named Barnaby’s to discuss leads on their ongoing assignment while also taking a moment to unwind from a hectic workweek, per Atlas of Wonders.

Best Time to Visit: Evenings and nights are the times when the bar will be at its peak. According to TripAdvisor, Ridley House is open from 4-9:30 PM during the week and from 10 a.m.-10 PM on weekends. Expect busier crowds after 7 PM.

Transportation Options: Bus routes, including SEPTA Bus 113 and Route 107, both run along MacDade Boulevard, with stops near the bar. The regional transit stop MacDade Blvd & Norwood Avenue is also nearby, and there is a parking lot located on site. Opt for a rideshare or taxi service if you plan to enjoy alcoholic beverages while visiting.

The Ridley House, located off of MacDade Boulevard in Holmes, Pennsylvania, is a popular hangout for locals and visitors alike. Located in Holmes, Pennsylvania, the locally run bar is easily accessible and features a full menu, as well as craft beer and cocktail options. The bar makes its debut in episode three where it’s called Barnaby’s – a callback to The Ridley House’s former namesake until it was changed in 2019, per CBS News.

Visiting this location for a brew and a bite is the perfect way to decompress, just like some of the show’s frontrunners must do as they are attempting to solve the violent crimes taking place in the surrounding neighborhoods.

Things to Do: If you’re looking for an activity before a night of beers, consider visiting MacDade Bowl for a casual option that’s great for groups. You could also visit the Colonial Pennsylvania Farmstead for a close-up look at 18th-century farm life.

Where to Eat: Try the dishes on the Ridley House’s rustic American Farm Fare menu with a craft beer for the full “Task” experience. If you’re looking for something easy, check out the nearby Gateway Diner or indulge in a late-night milkshake and burger at Nifty Fifty’s, also located off of MacDade Boulevard.

Where to Stay: The Clarion Hotel, SpringHill Suites by Marriott and Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham are all located less than 10 minutes away from the bar and extremely convenient for access to the Philadelphia Airport.

Key Scenes: In the trailer, Mark Ruffalo’s character is seen hunting down Robbie (Tom Pelphrey) as he attempts to catch the crew responsible for the robberies in Delaware County. The scenes showing the characters running through the woods, including a notable chase scene, were all filmed in and around Wissahickon Valley Park, The Chestnut Hill Local reports.

Best Time to Visit: Autumn is the ideal time to stroll through this park if you’re looking to take in the vibrant colors and scenery without battling the summer crowds. Additionally, early mornings on weekends throughout the year are an excellent option for hikers and bikers to enjoy the trails.

Transportation Options: The park is easily accessible by car or by Route 9 on the SEPTA bus track, with a stop right at the Ridge Avenue entrance of the park. Regional rails and trains are also an option, with direct access to the park from the Wissahickon Station.

Wissahickon Valley Park provides wooded scenery and beautiful nature views that contrast the urban and suburban homes that are at the heart of the story. According to PrimeTimer, key shootout scenes and chasing scenes were filmed in and around the park, including scenes that are teased in the show’s trailer. 2000+ acres of trees provided a perfect background for ominous scenes that further the impact of the criminals’ agenda. Filming also took place along Kitchen’s Lane, Thomas Mill Covered Bridge and Wises Mill Road, all located within the park.

Visiting any park can be beautiful and beneficial for our health, but stopping by this specific area may allow viewers to feel what the characters were feeling as they ran for their lives through the dark woods. If you don’t have the bravery to walk the trails at night, consider visiting the park during the fall season to enjoy the changing leaves and comfortable temperatures.

Things to Do: Hike, bike or run along Forbidden Drive, one of the most popular gravel paths in the park. The historic Thomas Mill Covered Bridge is another popular destination, as is Mom Rinker’s Rock & Toleration Statue, which boasts views of the valley and creek.

Where to Eat: Valley Green Inn is a historic tavern located along Forbidden Drive that makes a perfect option for a midday snack. Maria’s Ristorante on Summit is another crowd favorite with white linen tablecloths and Italian fare for the whole family.

Where to Stay: The Chestnut Hill Hotel is a boutique hotel option located within the park. The hotel is known for its unique decor, maintained history and focus on customer service. Hilton Philadelphia City Avenue is another option that makes both Historic Downtown Philadelphia and the Philadelphia International Airport extremely accessible.
