‘We are the missing piece’: 5 Black woman coaches see fresh opportunity in Unrivaled
When the second season of the Unrivaled basketball league tipped off on Jan. 5, it did so with five of its eight teams being led by Black women.
It’s a striking display of representation for Black female head coaches at the professional level – especially when compared with other women’s basketball leagues like the WNBA. When the WNBA begins its next season, there will be no Black women leading any of its 15 franchises.
Unrivaled is telling a different story.
Ahead of the Unrivaled season, the Black female head coaches of the 3-on-3 league – Nola Henry, Roneeka Hodges, Noelle Quinn, Rena Wakama and Teresa Weatherspoon – joined Andscape senior writer Sean Hurd for a conversation on the state of coaching for Black women in pro basketball.
