US State Department Raises Tanzania Travel Advisory To Level 3, Citing Crime And Terrorism Concerns

The United States Department of State has elevated its travel advisory for Tanzania to Level 3, urging American citizens to “reconsider travel” to the popular East African destination. The upgrade from the previous Level 2 warning comes amid increasing concerns over violent crime, terrorism threats, and reports of harassment targeting LGBTQIA+ individuals in the country.

According to the State Department‘s updated advisory, “There is risk of terrorist violence, including terrorist attacks and other activity in Tanzania.” The warning emphasizes that “Violent crime is common. It includes assault, sexual assault, robberies, mugging, and carjacking.”

The advisory further notes that local police forces have “limited resources to respond effectively to serious crime,” potentially leaving travelers vulnerable in emergencies. The State Department has also cautioned about unpredictable demonstrations that may occur “in response to political or economic issues,” creating additional safety risks for visitors.

LGBTQIA+ Travelers Visiting Tanzania Face Additional Risks

The travel advisory highlights specific dangers for LGBTQIA+ travelers to Tanzania. The State Department warns that individuals from this community have been “arrested, targeted, and harassed” and “may experience a higher likelihood of being targeted by police.” The warning goes even further, noting that those detained under suspicion of same-sex sexual conduct could potentially face invasive physical examinations.

Tanzania has long been a cornerstone of African tourism, drawing visitors worldwide to its spectacular natural attractions, including the Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, and Mount Kilimanjaro – Africa’s highest peak. Zanzibar, with its historic Stone Town and pristine beaches, has been particularly popular among international travelers seeking both cultural experiences and tropical relaxation. The country’s tourism sector, which contributes significantly to its economy, may face challenges due to this elevated advisory.

Recommendations For Travelers Who Still Plan to Visit

For those who still choose to travel to Tanzania despite the advisory, the State Department has issued several precautionary recommendations. Travelers should develop their own emergency evacuation plans that do not rely on U.S. government assistance, avoid drawing attention to themselves, and refrain from public displays of affection, especially between same-sex couples.

The advisory also suggests that travelers carry copies rather than originals of their U.S. passports and visas, and enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive alerts from U.S. diplomatic missions.
