Officially, Geno Smith will join the Las Vegas Raiders. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that the Seattle Seahawks traded their starting quarterback to the Raiders on Friday in return for a third-round draft pick. Smith and Raiders head coach Pete Carroll, who coached him in Seattle, will now be reunited.
According to reports, the Seahawks were considering extending Smith’s deal, but talks broke down, therefore the trade was decided upon instead. Seattle is now turning its attention to free agency, allegedly looking to replace quarterback Sam Darnold of the Minnesota Vikings.
Geno Smith’s new beginning in Las Vegas
Smith has a new opportunity with the Raiders after reviving his career with the Seahawks. The 33-year-old quarterback had an incredible 2022 campaign, throwing for 4,282 yards and 30 touchdowns to win NFL Comeback Player of the Year. But in 2023, his performance declined, so Seattle looked into other candidates for the role.
Smith will contend for the starting position with the Raiders. He might be able to recapture his 2022 form with the reunion with Carroll.
