The World’s Tallest Bridge Just Opened — And It Cuts A 2-Hour Drive Down To 2 Minutes

The record-breaking Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge in Southern China has officially opened to traffic. Standing approximately 2,050 feet above the Beipan River, the massive structure now holds the title of the world’s tallest bridge, according to NBC News. The bridge surpasses the previous record holder, which was also located in the same Guizhou province of China.

The engineering marvel opened on Sunday, September 28, 2025, and stretches approximately 4,600 feet in length. Local officials confirm that the bridge dramatically reduces travel time across the deep canyon, transforming a lengthy two-hour journey into an astonishing two-minute drive.

How Years Of Work Led To The World’s Tallest Bridge

The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge took precisely three years and eight months to complete, an impressive timeframe considering the scale and complexity of the project. NDTV reports indicate that engineers faced numerous challenges during construction, including managing temperatures during large-scale concrete pours, stabilizing steep canyon slopes, and mitigating the impact of strong winds.

The bridge underwent rigorous testing to ensure its structural integrity before opening, including a load test that deployed 96 trucks to strategic points across the bridge to simulate heavy traffic conditions. Over 400 sensors monitored the bridge’s main span, towers, cables, and suspenders for even the slightest shifts.

Tourism And Economic Impact

The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge was constructed not only to improve transportation infrastructure but also to boost tourism and economic development in the Guizhou region. According to NBC News, one of the highest points of the structure features a coffee shop situated approximately 2,600 feet above the river.

Located atop one of the towers, tourists can take a high-speed elevator to the lookout point for sweeping views of the surrounding landscape. The bridge also boasts a 207-meter sightseeing elevator, sky cafes, and viewing platforms that offer breathtaking views of the canyon below. For adventure seekers, it offers bungee jumping opportunities and a glass walkway positioned 1,900 feet above ground level.
