Led by The Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp, the provocative series explored the rise of a Pop star hopeful and the chaos that engulfed the world around her.
Helmed by ‘Euphoria’ creator Sam Levinson and co-produced by The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye), the show had been the subject of much buzz before hitting screens.
However, from the moment the show officially debuted, the response was polarizing…at best.
Critic reviews were scathing and it was common for the series to trend on social media for all the wrong reasons.
Ratings for the show have proven difficult to track too, given that the network only released viewing for the first two episodes. And even those represented a dip. Indeed, 913,000 same-day viewership was reported across HBO and HBO Max for episode 1, while episode 2 dropped to 800,000.
Speaking on the cancellation, a spokesperson for HBO said in a statement:
“The Idol was one of HBO’s most provocative original programs, and we’re pleased by the strong audience response. After much thought and consideration, HBO, as well as the creators and producers have decided not to move forward with a second season. We’re grateful to the creators, cast, and crew for their incredible work.”
