Host and theGrio’s White House correspondent and Washington Bureau Chief April Ryan breaks down the latest political news in Washington.
On the latest episode of “The Hill with April Ryan,” host and theGrio’s White House correspondent and Washington Bureau Chief April Ryan breaks down the latest in the civil trial that found former President Donald Trump liable for sexual abuse, the federal charges against Republican Congressman George Santos and more.
“The Hill with April Ryan” also gets into the latest back and forth between Republicans and President Joe Biden over the raising debt ceiling. House Minority Leader, U.S. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., said “default would be catastrophic” after meeting with President Biden and congressional leaders at the White House.
Negotiations between the White House and Capitol Hill have now morphed into intense partisan bickering over the nation’s $34.1 trillion debt limit, which has already been breached. However, things could become catastrophic if the debt ceiling is not raised by June 1.
We also dive into how Black America should push forward financially with the latest interest rate increase by the Federal Reserve. Financial expert Tiffany “The Budgetnista” Aliche told theGrio, “We are at the highest we have been in 16 years.”
In another segment, U.S. Rep. Jamaal Bowman, D-N.Y., explained why Black Americans should be a part of the national conversation about gun violence. “If we are poor – not just of the pocket but of the mind – we are going to be more vulnerable to guns coming in,” the congressman argued.
Meanwhile, Shavon Arline-Bradley, the new president and CEO of the National Council of Negro Women, slammed Republicans across the country for their focus on so-called “anti-woke” policies and laws seeking to ban discussions on race and Black history. Republican governors and legislators, she said, are moving to undo progress for African Americans.
“This conservative movement is fearful of uprise,” said Arline-Bradley.
Lastly, President Biden will deliver the 2023 commencement address at Howard University. Biden is expected to give eager graduates a message of hope in the midst of political and racial divisions. It’s also worth noting the president’s speech will be at the alma mater of his vice president and 2024 reelection running mate, Kamala Harris.
