When asked if he intended to get the No. 2 jersey from teammate DeAndre Carter, Shedeur Sanders grinned and said:
“My signing bonus ain’t that high,”
For Sanders, the number holds special meaning. He wore it while attending Colorado and Jacksonville State, where the Buffaloes even retired it prior to his NFL Draft.
However, that chapter is now closed. Sanders has chosen to wear No. 12 as the Cleveland Browns’ new rookie quarterback. During rookie minicamp, he is focusing on controlling what he can to secure the starting position because Cleveland presently has five quarterbacks in the mix.
It seemed inevitable that Sanders would be questioned about the jersey switch during a casual talk with Andrew Siciliano.
Siciliano observed: “You were joking with the media that you’re not buying anyone else’s number right now. But did 12 feel good? It’s dad’s number backwards,”
Shedeur clarified: “You get the hint. You get the hint. So, yeah. It felt good wearing it. Any number is going to feel good wearing it. It’s about what you do in a number. For real,”
No. 12 has greater significance for Sanders than just the Deion nod. Throughout his career, his mentor and hero, Tom Brady, made the number 12 an NFL legend.
