The Las Vegas Raiders have been making some big moves lately. Well, there’s been some talk about them possibly hiring Deion Sanders as a coach for the team. I mean, that would be great, right? Prime Time coaching the Raiders? But here’s the thing – turns out, the feeling might not be mutual.
Despite Sanders showing interest in coaching the Raiders, top management and owners are not feeling it as they are eyeing other potential candidates for the top job at the Raiders.
Mark Davis and co. have ‘zero interest’ in hiring the 57-year-old, according to The Athletic, amid the franchise’s hunt for yet another new head coach.
The Raiders fired Pierce Tuesday after the embattled franchise’s 4-13 finish to the season saw them head into the offseason without playoff football for yet another year.
Days later, associates of Sanders’ with connections to the league were reported to have reached out to the team to inform them of his interest, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
But the Raiders ownership, in particular minority owner Tom Brady, are reportedly eyeing up other candidates.
The Raiders have already interviewed Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, and Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. They have set interviews with former Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll and ex-New York Jets coach Robert Saleh next week.
And Brady, who is part of the interview process, is said to be targeting Johnson as his favorite for the role.
Brady is personally involved in recruiting the Detroit Lions offensive coordinator with the seven-time Super Bowl winner ‘enamored’ by him, according to NFL Insider Ian Rapoport.
Brady, a minority owner for the Raiders, has also spent time with Johnson’s agent, Rapoport said.
But hey, who knows what the future holds? Maybe owners of the Raiders will have a change of heart and knock on Deion Sanders’ doors in the coming weeks. Only time will tell. Until then, we’ll just have to keep our eyes on the sidelines and see who ends up taking the Raiders’ coaching job.
