Patriots Appoint Mike Vrabel as the New HC

To replace Jerod Mayo, who concluded with a 4-13 record in his inaugural season after taking over for the famous Bill Belichick, the New England Patriots have hired Mike Vrabel as their new head coach.

A week after owner Robert Kraft fired Jerod Mayo during the season’s final game against the Buffalo Bills, the Patriots announced the hiring on social media on Sunday.

“He’s Back! The Patriots boasted on its X account, “Mike Vrabel, a member of the Patriots Hall of Fame, is back in New England as our 16th head coach.”

The Patriots’ pick is Mike Vrabel

The team was inducted into the club’s Ring of Honor in 2023, and Vrabel, a former linebacker who won three Super Bowl championships with the Pats, was the front-runner to take over.

According to NFL Research and NFL.com, “Vrabel is the first coach since 1950 to replace another coach and both had played together in the NFL as teammates, since Forrest Gregg replaced Bart Starr as head coach of the Packers in 1984.”

Vrabel, 49, had interviewed for head coaching positions with the Bears and Jets in addition to the Patriots, but he was always the front-runner to return to Foxborough with the goal of bringing the identity back to New England.

In contrast to Mayo, Vrabel’s background includes head coaching experience and a 56-48 overall record with the Tennessee Titans from 2018 to 2023. He made an appearance in the 2019 AFC Championship Game and has a 2-3 postseason record.
