LeBron James helped the Los Angeles Lakers win their only championship in 2020, but overall, it might be said that the team has underperformed while he has been there.
James is in his sixth season with the Lakers and will turn 40 later this month. In the last six seasons, the team has qualified for the playoffs four times, earning two visits to the Western Conference Finals and one NBA Championship ring during that time. Los Angeles is presently the eighth seed in the Western Conference with a record of 13-11.
Although this season got off to a promising start, James has occasionally shown his age, and the rookie acquisitions of Dalton Knecht and Bronny James—the oldest son of LeBron James—haven’t been enough to elevate what is essentially the same lineup from the previous campaign.
Should Lebron James Make One Last Move?
Therefore, the Lakers have a big choice to make before the trade deadline on February 6th, when they are anticipated to be active: either transfer both members of the James family and start rebuilding around 31-year-old superstar Anthony Davis or deal for an upgrade around the James family.
The consensus in the league is that L.A. plans to take the first approach. But according to a Monday article by ClutchSports’ Anthony Irwin, path No. 2 is gaining some traction.
Irvin wrote: “Sources close to the Lakers did say that if James asked the Lakers to trade him, they would work with him to find a deal that lands him where he’d rather be but also brings back the kind of return that would jumpstart a rebuild,” “If James was traded, it’s also believed Bronny James would have to be part of the deal.”
The Lakers are not actively looking to move James, Irwin noted at the beginning of his article. Before last season’s deadline, the Golden State Warriors expressed interest in a trade for the four-time MVP, and ESPN analyst Mike Wilbon recently proposed a similar transaction as a win-win situation for both parties. Other teams in the league would undoubtedly be interested in acquiring James, especially if he is prepared to accept a wage reduction in the next season or seasons.
