QB Matthew Stafford was questioned about his NFL future less than an hour after the Los Angeles Rams‘ 28–22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Sunday’s divisional round of the playoffs. The game hadn’t concluded long ago, Stafford said, looking at his watch, and he would “take some time to think about it.”
“But I feel like I was playing some pretty good ball,” Stafford remarked. The response to the question of whether he still had football left in him was, “Sure feels like it.”
Stafford, 36, and the Rams worked to modify his deal, which still has two years left on it. When asked about Stafford’s future during Sunday’s game, Rams coach Sean McVay said, “I’m not really interested in talking about anything as it relates to next year.”
“Right now, I’m just appreciative of this team,” McVay stated.
Speaking passionately from the platform, McVay expressed his admiration for the Rams, who went from 1-4 going into their bye week to winning nine of their next 11 games to win the NFC West.
The team’s defeat to the Eagles, according to the veteran coach, “epitomized the resilience, the grit, the ability to overcome adversity” of this season.
With no interceptions and 324 yards for two touchdowns, Stafford completed 26 of 44 passes. In the fourth quarter, he lost one of his two fumbles. According to ESPN Research, Stafford has tied Kurt Warner for the most passing touchdowns in Rams history with 15 in the playoffs.
With a first down at the Philadelphia 21 with one minute, 19 seconds remaining, the Rams had an opportunity to score and kick an extra point to take the lead. Stafford’s fourth-down pass was incomplete following a false start, a 10-yard completion, and a sack for a loss of nine yards on third down.
