Marlon Wayans is renowned for keeping it candid about many corners of his life.

And, as he gears up for his next standup special, the funnyman has opened up about the transgender transition of one of his children.

Speaking candidly during a recent interview on The Breakfast Club, Wayans shared:

“I have a daughter that transitioned into a son. My daughter Amai is now Kai.”

Expanding, the 51-year-old said:

“I just want my kids to be free. I want them to be free in spirit, free in thought, free to be themselves. The more you know yourself, the more you can govern yourself; the more you live your truth, the happier your existence. So, if they can’t get that in the household with their father and their mother, who the f*ck do I send them out into the world with that kind of confidence? And I’m just so proud of them for being them.”

Continuing, the comic said of his own journey:

“My transition as a parent, going from ignorance and denial to complete unconditional love and acceptance.

I think there’s a lot of parents out there who need to have that message, and I know I’m dealing with it. [It’s been] a very painful situation for me, but it’s one of the best, funniest hours [of comedy] I could ever imagine.”

Acknowledging that he isn’t always a perfect parent, Wayans says Kai – who he deems “brilliant” and “the most well-read, smartest Wayans” – “know[s] I love them.”
