Madonna’s ‘Like a Virgin’ Album Inducted into Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry

Already listed as one of the best-selling female albums of all time, Madonna’s 1984 LP ‘Like a Virgin’ is no stranger to induction into exclusive clubs.

Thanks to recent news from the Library of Congress, however, the Queen of Pop is seeing her sophomore studio effort reign in a new historical capacity.

Details inside.

As Madge gears up to deliver some of the ‘Virgin’ era’s most memorable hits live on her career-spanning ‘Celebration Tour,’ the Pop royal was greeted with news her breakthrough opus is among the game-changing projects inducted into this year’s National Recording Registry.

Joining the likes of Mariah Carey‘s ‘All I Want for Christmas’ (as we reported here), Queen Latifah‘s groundbreaking ‘All Hail the Queen,’ Daddy Yankee‘s ‘Gasolina,’ and more, this year’s 25 inductees were narrowed down from a whopping list of 1,100 nominees.

“The National Recording Registry preserves our history through recorded sound and reflects our nation’s diverse culture,” said Carla Hayden, Librarian of Congress. “The national library is proud to help ensure these recordings are preserved for generations to come, and we welcome the public’s input on what songs, speeches, podcasts, or recorded sounds we should preserve next.”

Referred to “treasures worthy of preservation for all time based on their cultural, historical or aesthetic importance in the nation’s recorded sound heritage,” the addition of this year’s inductees brings the registry’s total count to 625. See the full list here.

The Diamond-certified ‘Virgin,’ Madonna’s first chart-topping album in the United States, remains her best-selling effort in the country.  Worldwide, it boasts sales of over 21 million.
