LeBron James and Brian Windhorst share a long history. This lengthy narrative traces back to northeast Ohio, where Windhorst began covering James during his high school days and followed him through much of his NBA career. The more concise recent chapter highlights James poking fun at Windhorst during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show seemingly without cause.

We may now have a clearer understanding of the situation after James and the social media accounts for his Mind the Game podcast took to X on Tuesday to showcase their success in front of an initial detractor: Brian Windhorst.

A video shared on the podcast’s X account features Windhorst stating that NBA fans “are interested in the drama” and that “if [James] were to sit down with (co-host) Steve Nash and discuss Xs and Os for an hour, people wouldn’t enjoy that either.”

Shortly after posting, James added a comment above the video saying:

“Long ways from being done!! Sucks they have to listen to 2 guys who know nothing about basketball talk about basketball! Sorry
@SteveNash,”

The timing of James hearing Windhorst express skepticism about Mind the Game before his McAfee appearance seems off, but it’s possible that the King took umbrage at Windhorst’s perspective on basketball discussions. This same attitude ignited James’ earlier conflict with Stephen A. Smith.

After years of being the focus of tabloid stories and legacy conversations, James decided to take control with Mind the Game to provide a more basketball-focused approach to NBA commentary. Hearing people like Windhorst belittle that goal must be disheartening.

Regardless of whether this inspired James’ earlier jab at Windhorst in March, it certainly complicates their relationship further. And considering how competitive James is, any skepticism will likely drive him, even if in this case, it results in creating an exceptional podcast instead of clinching another NBA championship.
